About Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park is home to one of the most extraordinary wildlife events in the world — 'The Gathering'. Between June and September, as the dry season progresses, up to 300-400 wild elephants converge on the shores of the ancient Minneriya Tank (reservoir), built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. This mass congregation of elephants is considered the largest gathering of Asian elephants anywhere on Earth. Beyond this spectacular event, the park's 8,889 hectares of mixed evergreen forest and scrubland support populations of sambar deer, purple-faced langurs, toque macaques, and over 160 bird species.
